The Yakushima tradition is for each household to grow thier own vegetables and then to offer any extra they might have for sale at local roadside stands located all over the island. Yakuzen life has earned the reputation of having some of the best vegetables in terms of quality, quantity, and diversity. Depending on the time of year you can find: Tantan (oranges grown only on the island), sweet potato (imu - an island specialty), mango, papaya, guava, napa cabbage, carrots, daikon, water cress, spring onions, various citruses, and so much more.
